GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS - DAZOMET PRODUCTS
MODE OF ACTION: When DAZOMET granules contact warm, moist soil, they release gases that eliminate actively respiring nematodes, fungi, insects, and weeds. The soil must remain sealed for a sufficient time to complete the fumigation process. After sterilizing the soil, these gases must dissipate entirely before planting the crop.
APPLICATION:
- Spread granules by hand or with an accurate drop spreader onto moist soil.
- Incorporate with a rotary hoe or a hand hoe.
- Seal the soil surface, preferably with plastic sheeting.
- Use clean implements to aerate the soil to avoid contamination.
- Do not enter glasshouses for 7 days after application without wearing specified personal protective equipment.
- Conduct a successful Germination Test before planting.
PRECAUTIONS:
- Workers with previous skin or respiratory tract irritation from dazomet or metham-sodium exposure should avoid working with DAZOMET PRODUCTS.
- Workers involved in manual water-sealing and plastic sealing should wear specified personal protective clothing, including a respirator with organic vapor/gas cartridge and goggles.
RE-ENTRY PERIOD:
- Field Uses: Do not allow entry into treated areas for 48 hours after application. When prior entry is necessary, wear personal protective equipment specified for applicators.
- Greenhouse Application: Do not allow entry into treated areas for 7 days after application. Wear personal protective equipment specified for applicators with goggles and a half-face respirator with an organic vapor/gas cartridge.
RE-HANDLING PERIOD:
- Potting Soil: Treated soil must remain covered by impermeable material for 7 days. When prior handling is necessary, wear specified personal protective equipment.
- Thoroughly ventilate greenhouses for 24 hours after removing plastic.
PROTECTION OF CROPS, NATIVE AND OTHER NON-TARGET PLANTS:
- Do not sow or plant until the Germination Test indicates the soil is free of fumigating gases.
- Do not apply within 60 to 90 cm of plants or the root zone of trees or shrubs.
- If using in a confined area, no growing plants should be within that area, or share the same air supply.
- Conduct the Germination Test to ensure suitable conditions for planting.
GERMINATION TEST:
- Scrape surface soil aside in treated and untreated areas, placing samples in sealed jars.
- Add cress or lettuce seeds to moist cotton pads in jars.
- Check for seed germination after 48 hours.
- If seeds in the treated soil jar germinate normally, the soil is clear for planting.
PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE, FISH, CRUSTACEANS, AND ENVIRONMENT:
- Do not contaminate streams, rivers, and waterways with the product or used containers.
STORAGE AND DISPOSAL:
- Store in the closed, original container in a cool, well-ventilated area.
- Dispose of containers at a local authority landfill or bury them at a licensed disposal site.
- Do not burn empty containers or product.
SAFETY DIRECTIONS:
- Product is poisonous if swallowed. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, throat, and skin.
- Wear specified protective clothing, including gloves, when handling the product.
- Wash hands, arms, and face thoroughly after use.
