GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

The product can be used pre-emergent to selectively control weeds in the crops listed in the Directions for Use table. Duration and effectiveness of control depend on the amount of chemical applied, soil type, rainfall, weed species, and other conditions. Best results are achieved if the product is applied to bare moist soil. Since the product mainly enters weeds through root absorption, sufficient moisture (either rainfall or irrigation) is required to move the product into the root zone of weeds to make the product effective. Delay in activation of this product may result in some weed growth. Results can be variable if seasonal conditions are dry prior to sowing and crops are sown into a dry or low moisture seedbed. Dense weed populations and multiple germinations (especially Wild Radish) may require post-emergent herbicide treatment to give acceptable control. Weeds buried by cultivation may not be effectively controlled. Heavy rainfall on light soils may cause movement of the herbicide out of the weed seed zone, resulting in reduced weed control. Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide is primarily incorporated by rainfall. Sufficient rainfall (20 to 30mm wither as rainfall or irrigation) to wet the soil through the weed root zone is necessary within 2 to 3 weeks of application to make the product effective. Weeds may germinate and emerge before being controlled by Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide; however, a delay in rainfall for an extended period may result in weeds germinating from depth and surviving.

Caution: The potential for Canola seedling damage may occur on:

  • Light soils with low organic matter if heavy rainfall follows sowing.

  • Dry sown canola crops treated with Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide after heavy rain events.

INTEGRATED WEED MANAGEMENT STRATEGY FOR TT CANOLA

The use of this product in TT canola is subject to the currently approved Integrated Weed Management Strategy for the use of triazine herbicides in TT canola. The Strategy encompasses: Integrated Weed Management, the specific management of crop plant volunteers and outcrossing to other plants; and triazine herbicide residue management (agronomic and environment). Compliance with registered label directions and adoption of the principles outlined in the Strategy will assist with implementation of crop management practices that minimize the development of herbicide resistance in treated weeds; reduce the levels of triazine residues in the environment; and manage volunteer plants and outcrossing. Copies of the Strategy are available from Imtrade Australia Pty Ltd.

Where specific information and farm management assessment are required to assist with the application of Integrated Weed Management programs on-farm, particularly in adapting strategies to local conditions, then specific expert advice should be obtained from an appropriate agronomist, consultant, chemical supplier, or Departmental advisor.

To minimize herbicide resistance:

  • Avoid dry sowing in heavily weed-infested paddocks. Wait for weed germination after the opening rains in weedy paddocks. Use a pre-plant knockdown or cultivation. No weeds should be allowed to survive at this stage.

  • DO NOT use the product if the area to be treated had a triazine herbicide applied to it last season.

  • Watch for escapes, especially in paddocks with a long history of Group 3 Herbicide use.

  • DO NOT use Group 3 Herbicides in consecutive years.

Resistant Weeds Reporting

Growers should collect plant or seed samples where weeds that are normally susceptible to Atrazine, Simazine, and Terbuthylazine may be resistant, get them tested, and seek professional advice.

MIXING

DO NOT mix or load within 20m of any well, dam, intermittent or perennial stream. Partially fill the spray tank with water and maintain agitation while adding the required quantity of product. Agitation should continue after filling and during spraying. If the spray is allowed to stand, agitate thoroughly before resuming spraying.

Spray Preparation

Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide is a Water Dispersible Granule formulation to be blended with water and applied as a spray. Granule formulations are designed to be added to large volumes of water and dispersed slowly under agitation. When using larger boomsprays and unable to add granules directly to a large volume in the tank via the top of the boomspray, pre-mixing may be necessary as follows:

  • Partly (30%) fill the boomspray tank with water.

  • Slowly add the required amount of Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide for the area to be sprayed into Granni Pot or another pre-mixing vessel while agitating well.

  • Ensure high water volumes and DO NOT add to the spray tank until the pre-mix is fully dissolved. This may take several mixes to ensure the correct amount is added to the boomspray tank.

  • Add the pre-mixed Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide into the boomspray tank with the agitation system operating.

  • Fill up to the correct volume with water.

  • The mixture must be kept in suspension at all times by continuous agitation.

  • Tank-mixtures should be tested for physical compatibility and efficacy before use.

  • DO NOT mix with MCPA. If tank mixing, Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide must be in suspension before adding other herbicides, insecticides, or surfactants. Wash the sprayer thoroughly after use.

APPLICATION

Incorporation By Sowing (IBS)

Product can be applied up to a week before sowing. For best results apply to moist soil immediately before sowing and incorporate with a combine or air-seeder which provides full soil disturbance to incorporate the product evenly. Ensure the crop is sown at 3-5cm. Where the crop is sown with minimum-tillage sowing equipment (fitted with knife points or blades less than 12mm wide and generally placed on 20cm tyne spacing) poor weed control may result in the furrows. For crop safety, maintain a slow to moderate speed to avoid leaving deep furrows and avoid throwing soil into adjacent furrows.

Ensure complete and uniform spray coverage on the soil. Spray coverage may be compromised where application is made to a ridged or excessively cloddy soil surface or where the cover of crop or weed residues restricts contact with the soil surface. Reduced effectiveness may occur where there is either reduced contact of the herbicide with the soil surface.

High stubble loadings or ash from a recently burnt paddock can lead to poor soil contact. Results may be unsatisfactory if ground cover from stubble exceeds 50%.

Standing stubble will cause less efficacy loss compared to stubble that has been dropped to the ground via mechanical means or grazing. It is best to delay application to recently burnt paddocks or windrows until rainfall occurs to disturb the layer of ash. Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide binds to ash stronger than it does to stubble (ash is free carbon).

Sowing with disc seeders may lead to unacceptable crop damage due to shallow, uneven seeding depth, and treated soil coming in contact with seeds.

COMPATIBILITY

It is advisable that a small-scale compatibility test be carried out prior to tank mixing with other products.

RESISTANCE WEED WARNING

Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide incorporates terbuthylazine, a member of the triazine group of herbicides with the inhibitor of photosynthesis at photosystem II mode of action, and propyzamide, a benzamide herbicide with the inhibitor of microtubule assembly mode of action. For weed resistance management this is a Group 3 and Group 5 Herbicide. Some naturally occurring weed biotypes resistant to Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide and Group 3 and Group 5 Herbicides may exist through normal genetic variability in any weed population. The resistant individuals can eventually dominate the weed population if these herbicides are used repeatedly. These resistant weeds will not be controlled by Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide or Group 3 and Group 5 Herbicides.

Since the occurrence of resistant weeds is difficult to detect prior to use, Imtrade accepts no liability for any losses that may result from the failure of Imtrade Effigy 900 WG Herbicide to control the resistant weeds. Advice as to strategies and alternative treatments that can be used should be obtained from your local supplier, consultant, local Department of Agriculture, Primary Industries Department, or Imtrade representative.
