A selective post-emergence contact herbicide for broadleaved weed control in onions, leeks, shallots and garlic.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
IMPORTANT: This information is approved as part of the Product Label. All instructions within this section must be read carefully in order to obtain safe and successful use of this product.
General information
Totril is an emulsifiable concentrate recommended for use as a selective post-emergence contact herbicide for the control of a wide range of annual broad-leaved weeds
RESTRICTIONS
NOT to be applied by hand held equipment. Avoid drift onto neighbouring crops. Susceptible crops are beans, brassicas (including oilseed rape), carrots, legumes, lettuce, tomatoes and other horticultural crops
WEEDS CONTROLLED
Weeds may be sprayed post-emergence from cotyledon stage (flexible-dose programme) up to six true leaves (full dose). Totril can follow approved pre-emergence herbicide and/or approved post-emergence herbicide treatment(s). For best results the largest weeds should not be beyond the fully expanded cotyledon stage at spraying. The following weed susceptibility ratings are based on limited data
CROP SPECIFIC INFORMATION
Totril is recommended for post-emergence treatment of broad-leaved weeds following the use of a soil acting pre-emergence herbicide. It is recommended post emergence in onions (bulb, salad), leeks, shallots and garlic. Totril may be applied as a single application up to 1.8 L/ha and as a programme of sprays up to a maximum total dose of 2.8 L/ha. There is no soil type restriction
Sown crops
Full dose applications:
Totril can be applied up to a maximum rate of 1.8 L/ha to control established larger weeds (4-6 leaf stage). However it is important to note that crop tolerance is related to the development of leaf waxes and applications before three true leaves are fully expanded may cause crop damage at this full rate. Crop tolerance will also be reduced when the crop is suffering from stress or leaf waxes have been impaired in their development or are physically damaged. Apply in a water volume of between 300 and 400 L/ha as appropriate to achieving good cover of the weeds. Spray quality: MEDIUM (BCPC) No more than the maximum total dose of 2.8 L/ha may be applied per crop
Flexible dose programme:
Totril may also be applied as a flexible dose programme depending upon crop and weed growth stage. This is particularly appropriate where climatic or cultural conditions result in ‘flushes’ of weeds or when there is early weed emergence before the crop is fully hardened. The dose of application should be adjusted to take into account crop safety and weed susceptibility. The crop safety of Totril is dependent upon the development of leaf waxes, with higher doses being tolerated as the crop grows. As a guide to crop safety, low doses of around 0.15 L/ha are appropriate at emergence of the first true leaf, increasing to 0.5 L/ha once the second leaf has emerged. At least 7 days should elapse between applications. The full dose of 1.8 L/ha is generally well tolerated once the third leaf has fully expanded and surface waxes are in good condition. Crop tolerance will be reduced if the crop is suffering from stress. It is recommended that the programme begins as soon as weeds first emerge and are at the vulnerable cotyledon stage but not before the first true leaf of the crop has begun to emerge. Earlier germinating or less susceptible weed species may not be killed by the first treatment. They will usually be checked and then controlled by later applications. Further applications should be made as each new flush of weeds reaches the cotyledon stage. As the crop matures higher rates of application can be made to control more difficult weed species. Apply in a water volume of between 300 and 400 L/ha as appropriate to achieving good cover of the weeds. Spray quality: MEDIUM (BCPC) No more than the maximum total dose of 2.8 L/ha may be applied per crop.
Transplanted crops
Full dose applications: Totril can be applied up to a maximum rate of 1.8 L/ha to control established larger weeds (4-6 leaf stage). However it is important to note that crop tolerance is related to the condition of leaf waxes. Therefore, to ensure that any wax physically damaged during transplanting has had the opportunity to be replaced, it is recommended that 2-3 weeks have elapsed before the first application of Totril, post-transplanting. The full dose of 1.8 L/ha is generally well tolerated by the crop once the third leaf has fully expanded and surface waxes are in good condition. Crop tolerance will be reduced if the crop is suffering from stress. Apply in a water volume of between 300 and 400 L/ha as appropriate to achieving good cover of the weeds. Spray quality: MEDIUM (BCPC) No more than the maximum total dose of 2.8 L/ha may be applied per crop.
Flexible dose programme:
Totril may also be applied as a flexible dose programme depending upon weed growth stage. This is particularly appropriate where climatic or cultural conditions result in ‘flushes’ of weeds. The dose of application should be adjusted to take into account crop safety and weed susceptibility. For optimum weed control, the programme should begin as soon as weeds first emerge and are at the vulnerable cotyledon stage. Early germinating or less susceptible weed species may not be killed by the first treatment. They will usually be checked and then controlled by later applications. Further applications should be made as each new flush of weeds reaches the cotyledon stage. As the crop matures higher rates of application can be made to control more difficult weed species. The rate of application in terms of crop safety is dependent upon growth stage and the condition of surface waxes (for further details see sown crops section). Leaf scorch and some distortion can occur after spraying Totril. In normal circumstances this is transitory and should not affect yield. Do not treat crops growing under adverse conditions (e.g. extreme cold, severe frost, flooding, drought, wind damage, severe disease) otherwise this damage can be accentuated. Apply in a water volume of between 300 and 400 L/ha as appropriate to achieving good cover of the weeds. Spray quality: MEDIUM (BCPC) No more than the maximum total dose of 2.8 L/ha may be applied per crop.MIXING AND SPRAYING Half fill the spray tank with clean water, add the required amount of Totril. Wash out container and add the washings to the spray solution. Top up with clean water. Agitate thoroughly before spraying commences. Do not leave the sprayer filled with the spray solution standing for long periods. Continue agitation until spraying is completed.
