Compact Rush
Juncus conglomeratus
Common in wet grassland and moorland, in similar habitats to Soft Rush
Flowerhead diameter c 8-10 mm, more in occasional lax-flowered specimens
ID: Similar to Soft Rush, but stems clearly ridged (ridges can be felt with fingers).
Other features: Normally shorter than Soft Rush, flowerheads usually compact. I have occasionally found very robust forms which I suspected to be hybrids but they turned out to be the species. Hybrids with Soft Rush probably do occur here, however.
