DIRECTIONS FOR USE
IMPORTANT: This information is approved as part of the Product Label. All instructions within this section must be read carefully to ensure safe and successful use of this product.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Clayton Tassel is a suspension concentrate containing the herbicide active ingredient mesotrione, designed for controlling annual broad-leaved weeds in grain maize and forage maize crops only. Clayton Tassel is absorbed by the weed foliage and works mainly by uptake through the leaves and limited uptake through the roots. After entering the plant, mesotrione is translocated to the growing points. For optimal results, apply when soil moisture is adequate, under warm/humid conditions, and when weeds are small and actively growing. Sensitive weed species will exhibit chlorosis and subsequently die after treatment.

WARNINGS AND RESTRICTIONS

  • Do not use on any crop grown for seed production.

  • Do not use on sweetcorn varieties.

  • To avoid damage to non-target plants, do not apply under windy conditions, and take extreme care to prevent spray drift. All broad-leaved species are highly susceptible to spray drift damage.

  • Do not apply to crops under stress due to causes like pest or disease attack, nutrient deficiency, drought, waterlogging, previous herbicide application, or any other stress factors.

  • Do not apply during very cold or frosty conditions, or when large temperature fluctuations or excessive rainfall are forecasted or expected.

  • Avoid overlapping spray bouts.

  • Ensure sprayers are thoroughly cleaned from previous uses and calibrated to apply the recommended spray volume and pressure. Verify that all nozzles perform equally and that the spray boom is at the correct height above the crop.

  • Do not contaminate water sources during sprayer cleaning. Avoid cleaning near surface water, and avoid contamination through drains.

CROPS AND TIMING

  • For grain maize and forage maize only

  • Apply when the crop has 2 to 8 leaves. For best results, apply when soil moisture is adequate, under warm/humid conditions, and when weeds are small and actively growing. Ensure that both the crop and weed foliage are dry at the time of application. Do not apply if heavy rainfall is forecasted or expected soon after application.

  • Some mild to moderate chlorosis of crop foliage may occur under extreme weather conditions, but this is transient and does not affect crop yield.

  • Treatment in poor growing conditions or dry soil may lead to less reliable weed control.

RESISTANCE MANAGEMENT

Clayton Tassel contains mesotrione, a 4-HPPD inhibitor that disrupts the synthesis of plant pigments involved in photosynthesis. To reduce the development of resistance, use Clayton Tassel in mixtures or sequences with other herbicides approved for grain and forage maize that have different modes of action. Rotate crops and use herbicides with different modes of action when necessary to further minimize resistance risk. Where maize crops are grown in successive seasons, avoid using Clayton Tassel for more than two consecutive seasons to reduce the potential for resistance.

APPLICATION RATE

  • Apply Clayton Tassel at 0.75 - 1.5 litres/ha in 200 - 300 litres of water per hectare.

  • Select the dose based on the weed species present (see Weeds Controlled).

  • Use 200 litres/ha wherever possible, but use 300 litres/ha if the weed foliage is dense.

  • Do not exceed the maximum water volume.

  • Apply using a conventional hydraulic nozzle field crop sprayer with suitable nozzles operating at 2 - 3 bar to deliver a MEDIUM quality spray (BCPC).

  • No tank-mix adjuvant is required or recommended.
