General Information:

Gilardo is a post-emergence herbicide for the control of broadleaf and grassy weeds in Maize. It contains the active ingredient Topramezone. Topramezone is a pyrazolone herbicide that inhibits HPPD (4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase), an enzyme involved in the synthesis of carotenoids. Carotenoids are essential for photosynthesis and plant growth. By inhibiting HPPD, Gilardo prevents the weeds from growing and eventually kills them.

Active Ingredient:

  • Topramezone 33.6% SC

Mode of Action:

Gilardo is a systemic herbicide that is absorbed by the leaves and roots of the weeds and translocated to the growing points, where it inhibits HPPD. Carotenoids are essential for photosynthesis and plant growth. By inhibiting HPPD, Gilardo prevents the weeds from growing and eventually kills them.

Application:

Gilardo should be applied post-emergence to the weeds, when they are 2-4 leaf stage. It can be applied using a knapsack sprayer or a boom sprayer. The recommended dose of Gilardo is 1.5-2.0 liters/ha.

Precautions:

  • Gilardo is a selective herbicide, but it can injure some crops if applied incorrectly. It is important to read and follow the label directions carefully.
  • Gilardo is not rain fast. Therefore, it should not be applied if rain is expected within 4 hours of application.
  • Gilardo is toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. Therefore, it should not be applied near water bodies.

Additional Information:

Gilardo is a popular herbicide among maize farmers in India because it is effective against a wide range of weeds, including some difficult-to-control weeds such as Echinochloa and Digitaria. It is also relatively safe for maize plants and has a moderate residual activity in the soil, which helps to suppress weed growth.
