General Information:

Total is a post-emergence herbicide that contains the active ingredients sulfosulfuron and metsulfuron-methyl. It is effective against a wide range of annual and perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds in wheat, barley, maize, sorghum, and sugarcane.

Mode of Action:

Sulfosulfuron and metsulfuron-methyl are both sulfonylurea herbicides. Sulfonylurea herbicides inhibit the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS). ALS is an enzyme that is involved in the biosynthesis of essential amino acids in plants. By inhibiting ALS, sulfonylurea herbicides stop the production of these amino acids, which leads to the disruption of plant growth and development, and eventually to death.

Application:

Total can be applied as a foliar spray. The recommended dose and application method will vary depending on the weeds to be controlled and the crop to be protected. For example, to control annual and perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds in wheat, Total can be applied as a post-emergence herbicide at a dose of 25-35 grams per hectare.

Precautions:

  • Total is a selective herbicide, but it can harm some crops if applied incorrectly. It is important to read and follow the label directions carefully.
  • Total is not rain fast. Therefore, it should not be applied if rain is expected within 4 hours of application.
  • Total is toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. Therefore, it should not be applied near water bodies.
