Introduction
Veteran (Godrej Agrovet Ltd) Tembotrione 34.4% w/w SC is a broad-spectrum post-emergence herbicide used to control a wide range of annual and perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds in a variety of crops, including rice, wheat, sugarcane, and vegetables. It is a triketone herbicide that inhibits the enzyme protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO), which is essential for the synthesis of chlorophyll. Without chlorophyll, plants cannot photosynthesize and eventually die.
Mode of Action
Tembotrione is absorbed by the foliage of plants and translocated throughout the plant. Once inside the plant, it inhibits the enzyme PPO, which is responsible for the conversion of protoporphyrinogen to protoporphyrin IX. Protoporphyrin IX is a precursor to chlorophyll, and without it, plants cannot produce chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is essential for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy. Without photosynthesis, plants cannot grow and eventually die.
Application Rates
The application rate of Veteran will vary depending on the target weed, the crop, and the environmental conditions. In general, the application rate will range from 0.2 to 0.4 liters per hectare.
Application Methods
Veteran can be applied by foliar spray or by soil application. Foliar spray is the most common application method. To apply by foliar spray, mix the appropriate amount of product with water and apply the mixture to the foliage of the weeds until they are thoroughly wet. Soil application is typically used for pre-emergence control of weeds. To apply by soil application, mix the appropriate amount of product with water and apply the mixture to the soil surface before the weeds emerge.
Application Timing
Veteran should be applied when weeds are actively growing. The best time to apply is in the spring or fall when weeds are young and tender.
