A fungicide with protectant and systemic activity against soil borne Phytophthora and Pythium infections of strawberries and ornamentals

Fenomenal may be applied to strawberries as a pre-transplantation dip, post-transplantation drench, drip or foliar spray. The best protection is achieved with early treatment e.g. dip followed by drench. Maximum number of applications is 2 per year by any application technique – including a maximum of only 1 foliar spray per year.

Its curative and protectant disease control is boosted by stimulation of the plant’s natural defences. Used early as a dip followed by a drench, and now drip irrigation, Fenomenal gives your plants an outstanding start.

Phytophthora species can kill or greatly reduce the vigour, quality and productivity of strawberry plants. Plants in regularly saturated soils are at highest risk of infection. Early treatment with a fungicide is essential in high-risk situations as treatments are most effective in a preventative regime.

Flexible application timing
Flexible application options: dip, drench, drip irrigation or spray
Built-in resistance management
Stimulates plants’ natural defence mechanisms
Promotes root growth

Fenomenal may be applied to strawberries via pre-transplantation dip, post-transplantation drench, drip irrigation or foliar spray. The best protection is achieved with early treatment e.g. dip followed by drench. Maximum number of applications is 2 per year – including a maximum of only 1 foliar spray per year.

Apply fungicides according to manufacturers’ recommendations for the target disease (or complex) at the specific crop growth stage indicated. Effective disease management is a critical parameter in delaying the build-up of resistant pathogen populations. Fenomenal is best used preventatively and should not be relied on for its curative potential.

Use Fenomenal as part of an Integrated Crop Management (ICM) strategy incorporating other methods of control including, where appropriate, other fungicides with a different mode of action. Use of fungicides with different modes of action has been shown to protect against the development of resistant forms of disease.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
IMPORTANT: This information is approved as part of the Product Label. All instructions within this section must be read carefully in order to obtain safe and successful use of this product. Fenomenal is recommended for control of a range of Pythium and Phytophthora species that can either kill or greatly reduce the vigour, quality and productivity of strawberry and ornamental plants. Early treatment with a fungicide is essential in high risk situations as treatments are most effective in a preventative regime. Good cultural practice, particularly with respect to soil moisture management can offset the need for fungicide or be used as part of an integrated approach to keep these diseases at bay; plants in regularly saturated soils are at highest risk of infection.

RESTRICTIONS
Avoid spraying within 5 m of the field boundary to reduce effects on non-target insects or other arthropods.

Where such resistant strains occur, Fenomenal is unlikely to give satisfactory control.

RESISTANCE MANAGEMENT
MANAGEMENT STRATEGY TO MINIMISE THE LIKELIHOOD OF RESISTANCE
Apply fungicides according to manufacturer’s recommendations for the target disease (or complex) at the specific crop growth stage indicated. Effective disease management is a critical parameter in
delaying the build-up of resistant pathogen populations. Fenomenal is best used preventatively and should not be relied on for its curative potential.
Fenomenal is a mixture of two fungicides with different modes of action – fenamidone belongs to the imidazolinone class of chemistry and inhibits mitochondrial respiration (Qo-I type mode of action), whereas fosetyl-Al belongs to the phosphonates class of chemistry. The precise mode of action for the phosphonates is currently unknown. Fosetyl-Al penetrates the plant and acts against spore germination, mycelial development and sporulation.
Use Fenomenal as part of an Integrated Crop Management (ICM) strategy incorporating other methods of control, including where appropriate other fungicides with a different mode of action. Use of fungicides which have different modes of action have been shown to protect against the development of resistant forms of disease.

CROP SPECIFIC INFORMATION
Fenomenal has no phytotoxic effects on succeeding crops therefore there is no limitation in the choice of succeeding crops.

STRAWBERRY:
Fenomenal may be applied to strawberries as a pre-transplantation dip or post-transplantation drench or spray. A maximum of 2 applications are allowed to strawberry per year by any application
technique: 1 dip + 1 drench or 1 dip + 1 drip irrigation or 1 dip + 1 spray or 1 drench + 1 drip irrigation or 1 drench + 1 spray or 1 drip irrigation + 1 spray or 2 drench or 2 drip irrigation.

Pre-Transplantation Dip Treatment:
Fenomenal may be applied as a pre transplantation dip treatment for traditional and refrigerated ‘Frigo’ transplants.
Prepare a dip solution containing 150 g of Fenomenal per 100 L of water (in a suitable vessel allowing 50 ml of dilutent per plant) and dip all roots of the runners for 15 to 20 minutes.
If necessary top up the dip solution with the same concentration of dilutent (150 g Fenomenal per 100 L water). Prepare a fresh suspension every 2 days (or earlier if it becomes too dirty). 100 litres will treat approximately 2,000 runners, depending on cleanliness of the plants.
Hose down dirty plants before dipping. After dipping, allow to dry, before planting immediately. The maximum rate of product per crop for pre-transplantation dip treatment must not exceed 3 kg
product/ha per year (which is equivalent to 40,000 plants/ha treated at the above rate). The maximum number of applications by any technique must follow the “Other Specific Restriction” stated in the
Important Information box.

Use in IPM systems’
Foliar application of Fenomenal may adversely affect Aphid parasitoids present at the time. Further advice on the use of this product in IPM systems is available from Bayer Crop Science.

MIXING:
Ensure that the sprayer, other applicator type or mixing vessel is clean and set to give the correct volume of application and an even coverage. Half fill the sprayer or container with water then add the
recommended quantity of Fenomenal. Add the rest of the water and agitate/mix the mixture thoroughly. The diluted product must only be used on the day of mixing.

APPLICATION:
Fenomenal may be applied as a drench, a spray or via drip irrigation equipment. For rates, water volumes, timings and restrictions of application see Crop Specific Information. Additional advice is as
follows:
Drench applications: For best results when drenching, thoroughly saturate the growing medium. The growing medium should be moist before application.
Foliar sprays: Sprayers should be THOROUGHLY CLEANED before use and filters and jets checked for damage and blockages. Apply as a MEDIUM quality spray (as defined by BCPC). For spray
application to strawberries the spray boom and water volume should be adjusted to ensure good penetration of the crop, to ensure protection of the ‘crowns’ of the plants. High water volumes should be used as recommended.
Drip Irrigation: When applying by trickle irrigation systems, Fenomenal should either be diluted in a bulk tank or through an injector type diluter. Please also refer to the equipment manufacturer’s guidance for use of the equipment.
All application equipment should be washed/cleaned with water or dilute detergent solution and thoroughly rinsed more than once, with washings applied to the crop to be treated whilst keeping within the maximum application rates.
