Herbicide for the control of many broad-leaved weeds and some annual grasses in oilseed rape, swedes, turnips and the listed horticultural brassica crops.
A suspension concentrate containing 500 g/l metazachlor (44.3%w/w).

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
IMPORTANT: This information is approved as part of the Product Label. All instructions within this section must be read carefully in order to obtain safe and successful use of this product.
MASHONA is a residual herbicide requiring a fine, firm, moist soil for good efficacy. There are restrictions upon the soil types, methods and timings for the treatment of the listed crops. Do not use pre-emergence on broadcast crops.

WINTER OILSEED RAPE
All varieties of winter oilseed rape may be treated pre- or post-emergence.
(A). Application between sowing and crop emergence:
Treatment choices : The treatment of choice if the governing conditions allow
Governing conditions : Medium and heavy soils only - stony soils and organic soils are excluded. Drilled crops with seed covered with 15 mm soil – treat broadcast crops only post-emergence (B). Crops must not be late-drilled*. Seedbed free of surface trash and weeds, with the soil fine, firm and moist.
Treatment and remarks: Pre-emergence of the crop 1.5 l/ha in at least 100 l/ha water. Apply after drilling but before the seed chits - for moist, warm seedbeds this may be no longer than 48 hours

(B) Application early post-emergence of the crop:
Treatment choices: Suitable where preemergence application has not been applied
Governing conditions: Light, medium and heavy soils. Do not use on sands, very light soils and organic soils but it may be used on stony soils in the permitted categories. No restriction on sowing method – drilled and broadcast crops may be treated. The soil surface must be free of surface trash and firm
Treatment and remarks: Post-emergence of the crop 1.5 l/ha in at least 220 l/ha water. Apply from the first true leaf being half-expanded onwards until the crop leaves cover no more than 50% of the ground and whilst the weeds are still within their range of susceptibility but before the end of January.

SPRING OILSEED RAPE, SWEDES AND TURNIPS
Governing conditions:Light, medium and heavy soils only - sands, very light soils and organic soils excluded but may be used on stony soils in the permitted categories. Only drilled crops with seed covered with 15 mm soil may be treated. The soil surface must be free of surface trash with the soil fine, firm and moist.
Treatment and remarks:1.5 l/ha in 220-450 l/ha water. Use the higher volume of water on the less satisfactory seedbeds. For swedes and turnips Apply after drilling but before the seed chits - for moist, warm seedbeds this may be no longer than 48 hours. For spring oilseed rape Apply from two fully-expanded true leaves before weeds emerge until the crop leaves cover no more than 50% of the ground or the crop has 10 true-leaves, whichever is the earlier.

BROCCOLI/CALABRESE, BRUSSELS SPROUTS, CABBAGE, CAULIFLOWER
Crops to be treated may be grown from seed or transplanted. Ensure that the roots of transplanted crops are well covered by soil before application of MASHONA.
Governing conditions:Light, medium and heavy soils only - sands, very light soils and organic soils are excluded but may be used on stony soils in the permitted categories. The soil surface must be free of surface trash with the soil fine, firm and moist. Transplanted crops: Roots of transplants must be fully covered with firmed soil.
Treatment and remarks:1.5 l/ha in 220-450 l/ha water. Use the higher volume of water on the less satisfactory seedbeds. Leaf damage can occur if cold nights follow warm days. Avoid application during such periods. Drilled crops Before weeds emerge when the crop has 3-4 true leaves. Transplanted crops Before weeds emerge when the crop has become established and hardened-off (particularly for transplants grown in modules which tend to be softer).

WEATHER, SOIL AND CROP CONDITIONS
If herbicide is absorbed by the crop seed, severe damage or loss of crop vigour can result. Amongst factors leading to this condition are downward movement of the herbicide by high rainfall, high transpiration rates, insufficient soil cover, lack of soil firmness, low adsorbency of light or stony soils and poor inherent vigour of the crop. Do not apply MASHONA to soils with a compacted layer or to poorly drained soils as damage can occur under waterlogged conditions. Heavy irrigations should not be made after application of MASHONA.
As indicated above, reduced crop vigour and plant stand can occur with crops sprayed pre-emergence if heavy rain falls soon after application. Avoid or delay pre-crop emergence applications if heavy rain is forecast. If a check to the crop does occur due to heavy rain, this will usually grow out after a few weeks without affect upon yield.
For post-emergence applications, apply to dry crops, free of frost and when rain is not forecast for at least 4 hours. Weed control may be reduced by dry weather after application or under cold conditions. In the absence of rain, light irrigation (maximum x10 mm per time) will promote herbicidal activity.
Scorching of the crop leaves may occur if application is made during frosty weather, more particularly if applications are made in tank-mixtures.
Do not apply MASHONA in tank mixtures during frosty weather or if frost is forecast.
Do not overlap spray swaths.
Do not apply to crops under growing stresses such as those caused by drought, water logging, physical damage, nutritional disorder, prior use of other herbicides or any other cause, until normal growth has resumed.
Do not cultivate or disturb the soil surface after application, otherwise weed control may be reduced.

APPLICATION
Apply MASHONA as a MEDIUM spray (BCPC definition). Do not use filters in the spraying equipment finer than 50 mesh. Apply accurately to avoid overlapping spray swaths. Avoid spray drift; do not spray in windy weather.

MIXING
Invert the container several times and thoroughly shake immediately before use. Quarter-fill the spray tank with water. With the agitation in action, pour the required quantity of MASHONA into the spray tank. Top up the spray tank to required level and agitate thoroughly. Keep under agitation until the tank is sprayed out. When tank-mixing with other products, add MASHONA to the spray tank first. Spray immediately after mixing. Wash all spraying equipment thoroughly immediately after completion of spraying.

PROCESSED CROPS
Consult the processor before treating crops intended for processing.

FOLLOWING CROPS
Following MASHONA on winter oilseed rape
After normal harvest Any crop may be drilled as required. Replacement crops for autumn sowing after early failure Winter wheat (not durum) or winter barley may be sown after ploughing 15 cm deep. Replacement crops for spring sowing Plough 15 cm deep prior to seedbed cultivations. Brassicae, wheat (not durum), barley, field beans, linseed, forage maize, peas, potatoes.

Following MASHONA applied to spring crops
Plough 15 cm deep prior to seedbed cultivations. Do not sow carrots, lettuce, onions or parsnips for at least 5 months after application. Refer also to the labels of other products used on the same crop regarding following crops.

EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE
Immediately after use, wash equipment, including the sprayer filters, thoroughly with water and cleaning agent. Fill the spray tank with clean water and leave overnight. Spray out and allow equipment to dry. Traces of product left in the spray tank may damage susceptible crops sprayed later.

WEED CONTROL by MASHONA at 1.5 l/ha when applied pre weed emergence
SUSCEPTIBLE:Black-grass, Chickweed, common,Dead-nettle, red, Forget-me not, field,Groundsel, Mayweed spp.,Meadow-grass, annual, Parsley-piert Shepherd's-purse, Speedwell spp.
MODERATELY SUSCEPTIBLE:Poppy, common
RESISTANT:Field penny-cress,Fumitory, common,Knotgrass

Strains of some annual grasses, e.g. black-grass, wild-oat and Italian rye-grass, have developed resistance to herbicides which may lead to poor control. A strategy for preventing and managing such resistance should be adopted. Guidelines have been produced by the Weed Resistance Action Group and copies are available from the HGCA, CPA, your distributor, crop advisor or product manufacturer
