MAYA is recommended for use as a selective herbicide in forage maize, grain maize, sweetcorn, bulb onion, shallot, barley, oats, wheat, and linseed, for the control of a wide range of annual broadleaf weeds.

Other specific restrictions:
This product qualifies for inclusion within the Local Environment Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) scheme. Before each spraying operation from a horizontal boom sprayer, either a LERAP must be carried out in accordance with the ‘Local Environment Risk Assessment for Pesticides Horizontal Boom Sprayers’ booklet available from the HSE Chemicals Regulation Directorate’s website or the statutory buffer zone must be maintained. The results of the LERAP must be recorded and kept available for three years.
Applications should only be made to bulb onion and shallot crops that will be mechanically harvested.
Applications to bulb onion and shallot should only be made between 1 May and 30 September

RESTRICTIONS
DO NOT treat crops suffering from stress caused by drought, frost, disease or other adverse factors. CONSULT PROCESSOR BEFORE USING ON CROPS FOR PROCESSING. Avoid overlapping spray swaths.
 
WEEDS CONTROLLED
Applied as post-emergence herbicide in maize, sweetcorn, bulb onion, shallot, and linseed MAYA controls a wide range of annual broadleaved weeds, especially young seedlings. The treatment must be made when the weeds are between the cotyledon stage and the six leaf stage.

Timing
Apply from the two leaf stage of the crop up to the eight leaf stage (GS 12–18). The period of treatment must be determined by the growth of the weeds rather than by the growth of maize. The duration of protection covers the whole period when maize is susceptible to weed competition.

Apply when the crop is 3–15 cm tall but before flower buds are visible.

Autumn and spring sown cereals. Wheat, barley and oats may be treated from the two fully expanded leaf stage but before second node detectable stage.

APPLICATION SHOULD ONLY BE MADE TO BULB ONION AND SHALLOT CROPS THAT WILL BE MECHANICALLY HARVESTED. DO NOT APPLY MAYA TO BULB ONION OR SHALLOT GROWN FROM SETS.

Timing
Apply between 1 May and 30 September. Apply from crop emergence until four true leaves (GS 14). It is important to note that crop tolerance is related to the development of leaf waxes and application when the development to leaf waxes has been impaired may cause crop damage. This could be when the crop is under stress or when applied before three true leaves are fully expanded when the development of waxes may not be complete.
Water volume
Apply in 200 litres of water per hectare.
 
MIXING AND SPRAYING
Partly fill the tank with water to a level of approximately a third of total, and then start agitation. Add the required quantity of MAYA to the tank. Maintain agitation during treatment. Extreme care must be taken to avoid spray drift onto non-crop plants outside of the target area. Do not spray in windy weather. Do not apply using handheld or low pressure equipment or at water volumes lower than those recommended.
 
Tank cleaning
Wash spray equipment and container thoroughly with alkaline solution. Rinse twice through the system with pump to ensure that all pipes and nozzles are rinsed thoroughly.

WEED RESISTANCE
When herbicides with the same mode of action are used repeatedly over several years in the same field, selection of resistant biotypes can take place. These can propagate and may become dominating. A weed species is considered resistant to a herbicide if it survives a correctly-applied treatment at the recommended dose.
Development of resistance within a weed species can be avoided or delayed by alternating (or tank mixing) with suitable products having a different mode of action.

Always follow the WRAG guidelines for preventing and managing herbicide resistance.
MAYA is a nitrile herbicide (HRAC Code C3) whose mode of action is via membrane disruption caused by activated oxygen radicals formed by photosynthesis. Do not use MAYA, or any other C3 herbicide, as a sole means of broadleaved weed control in successive crops.
Always use broadleaved weed herbicides with other modes of action throughout the crop rotation.
Always monitor weed control effectiveness and investigate any occurrences of poor effectiveness. If unexplained contact your agronomist who may consider a resistance test appropriate.
