A residual pre- and post-emergence herbicide effective against a range of weeds in a variety of crops. Contains 500 g/l (44.3 % w/w) metazachlor as a suspension concentrate. Contains formaldehyde. May produce an allergic reaction.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
IMPORTANT: This information is approved as part of the Product Label. All instructions within this section must be read carefully in order to obtain safe and successful use of this product.

Restrictions
Do not use on crops which are suffering from stress at the time of application, if adverse weather is expected, or conditions are waterlogged, where there is a compaction layer, poorly drained soils or crops grown in a poor seed bed. Do not apply to crops growing in poor conditions such as brashy or stony soils. In these situations damage may occur although this may be outgrown.
Do not overlap spray swaths.
Extreme care should be taken to avoid damage by drift onto plants outside the target area.
For use pre-emergence, drill the seed to a depth of 15mm and ensure covered with soil before spraying as it is important that the herbicide does not reach the seed. In addition, when applying to brassicas in particular, ensure roots are well covered by soil.
Where seedbeds are fluffy and loose, ensure they are consolidated before applying STALWART.
Do not use as a pre-emergence treatment on broadcast crops.
If pre-emergence application is not possible due to poor seedbed/soil conditions or adverse weather, then apply post-emergence. Do not use filters finer than 50 mesh. In frosty conditions some transient damage may be seen. Wash all equipment thoroughly after use as traces of STALWART left in the spray tank may cause damage to susceptible crops treated later.
Consult processors before treating crops to be processed.
On winter oilseed rape – do not apply on light or stony soils, or use pre-emergence at full rate on dry cloddy seedbeds, when heavy rain is forecast, or on late drilled crops (end first week September in Scotland and Northern England, and mid September for the rest of the UK).
Transplanted brassicae – plants that are block raised for transplanting should be treated with care as they may be particularly sensitive.
The plants must be hardened off and well established before treating. Irrigation may be required to get to this stage, apply STALWART after irrigation. Ornamental plant production, nursery fruit trees – ensure plants are hardened-off and well established before applying STALWART. Do not apply if crops are under stress or have soft vigorously growing foliage, or in extremes of conditions such as very hot or cold weather, or under sunny conditions.
Not all species of trees and shrubs can be treated, it is important to test a small area first to check for sensitivity before treating the whole area.
Some damage may occur which should normally grow out.
The following species are more tolerant, but should still be tested on a small area first.
Useful weed control can be obtained on organic soils with an organic matter above 10%, but control may decrease as organic matter increases.

Resistance
Strains of some annual grasses e.g black-grass, wildoats and Italian ryegrass have developed resistance to herbicides which may lead to pool control. A strategy for preventing and managing such resistance should be adopted. Guidelines have been produced by the Weed
Resistance Action Group (WRAG) and copies are available from HGCA, CPA, your distribution, crop advisor or product manufacturer.
Repeated use of herbicides with the same mode of action can increase the risk of strains of weeds developing resistance to these compounds, leading to poor control. In order to minimise the risk, a strategy for preventing and managing such resistance should be adopted. Use products with different modes of action and from different chemical groups in sequence or tank-mix, in conjunction with effective cropping rotation and cultivation techniques.
In all cases the recommended rate of use should be adhered to. Follow WRAG guidelines.

Key elements of the resistance management strategy for STALWART:
Always follow WRAG guidelines for preventing and managing herbicide resistant weeds.
Maximise the use of cultural control measures wherever possible (e.g. crop rotation, ploughing, stale seedbeds, delayed drilling etc).
Use tank mixes or sequences of effective herbicides with different modes of action within individual crops, or successive crops.
For the control of herbicide resistant grass weeds, always use STALWART in sequence with other effective graminicides with different modes of action.
Monitor fields regularly and investigate the reasons for any poor control.

Weed Control and Crop Specific Information
Apply STALWART pre-emergence of the weeds. Weed control will be best achieved if soils are moist at the time of application or rainfall is expected shortly after application.

Succeeding crops
Any crop can be following normal harvest

Crop failure
If the crop fails for any reason ensure the ground is ploughed to a depth of 15cm
Autumn or Winter: only plant winter wheat (excluding durum wheat) and winter barley in the same autumn.
Spring: only plant brassicas, field beans, linseed, maize, oilseed rape, peas and potatoes.

Compatibility
Mixtures known to be incompatible include mixtures with liquid fertilisers, cycloxydim + lambdacyhalothrin and suspension fertilisers (except Omex Suspension Fertiliser).

MIXING AND SPRAYING
Before spraying it is important to check all hoses, filters and nozzles, and to ensure that the sprayer is clean and correctly set to give an even application at the correct volume. Half fill the spray tank with clean water and add the required quantity of STALWART.
Top up the sprayer tank with water to the required level, and agitate the mixture thoroughly before and during spraying. Do not leave tank mixes to stand in the tank. Maintain agitation at all times.
Wash sprayer thoroughly immediately after use, using a suitable tank cleaner and following the sprayer cleaning guidance provided by the equipment manufacturer.
