DIRECTION FOR USE
Restrictions
Do not apply Tanos within 14 days of harvest. Do not apply Tanos (or any product containing famoxadone) to potatoes more than six times. Do not apply more than three consecutive treatments containing active substances with Qol activity.

Recommendations for use
Control of late blight (Phytophthora infestans) Cymoxanil, one of the two active ingredients in Tanos, has been used in the UK for many years. The second active ingredient, Famoxate is a new low dose protectant fungicide. The two active ingredients combine to give both protective and curative activity against blight. Tanos will control strains of blight both resistant and sensitive to phenylamides. Its multi-site activity should ensure that resistance to the product does not develop. Early infection of crops from dumps, seed or volunteers is common. Often early infection is seen in the form of stem blight which is difficult to detect. Once the canopy closes then it is even more difficult to control these lesions. Spores can be washed down to infect developing tubers. When used at 0.5 to 0.7 kg/ha rates Tanos will deliver 125 to 175 g/ha of cymoxanil (compared to 90 g/ha for Curzate M). This additional cymoxanil in conjunction with the Famoxate offers the following benefits: • Improved curative activity • Excellent stem blight activity • Outstanding anti-sporulant activity These key attributes will offer the grower the best flexibility and efficacy particularly at the start of the blight programme, preventing early infection and/or minimising its likely effect. Tanos contains famoxadone. This is classed as a QoI active ingredient. As such, the use of Tanos should follow FRAC guidelines. The implication of these guidelines is indicated under the Statutory Conditions for Use.

Crops/varieties and timing
Tanos can be applied to all varieties of early and maincrop potatoes, including crops grown for seed. Consult processors before using on crops for processing. Tanos should be applied as soon as weather conditions are favourable for the spread of the disease. However, at latest, the first application should be made as the foliage meets along the rows. Account should also be taken of potential innoculum levels (e.g. potato dumps, volunteers and infected seed).

Rate of use
0.5 or 0.7kg Tanos per hectare – depending on timing of application, disease pressure and expected time of any sequential application. (0.35 kg/ha may be used in mixtures with full rate partner products outlined in the sections ahead on utilisation in blight programmes. See also the separate compatibility appendix).

Practical recommendations for use
Trials confirm that the best way to utilise Tanos in the blight programme is as follows:

From rosette through rapid growth phase:
1 application of Tanos 0.5 kg at the rosette stage followed by
2 applications of Tanos 0.7 kg at 7 day intervals, at the start of the rapid growth phase followed by
2 applications of Curzate M 2.0 kg at 7 day intervals for the second half of the rapid growth stage.

Canopy complete phase:
Tanos at 0.35kg/ha plus mancozeb 1360 g/ha or
Tanos at 0.35kg/ha plus Shirlan 0.3 l/ha
Tanos at 0.35 kg/ha plus Ranman 0.2 + 0.15
Tanos at 0.35 kg/ha plus Electis 1.8 kg/ha

Suppression of early blight (Alternaria spp)
Alternaria spp background
Overwinters primarily as conidia (spores) in soil or plant debris.
Primary inoculum (spores) produced in spring and are rain-splashed or wind dispersed to lower plant leaves.
Spores can germinate within 2 hrs between 7° and 35°C.
Infection can occur under alternating wet and dry conditions (irrigation, dew).
Young, actively growing plants are less susceptible to infection and do not exhibit visible symptoms following an infection.
Infections can remain latent until the plant tissue matures, foliar symptoms usually appear after flowering on older leaves.
Typical symptoms on younger leaves concentric rings “target spot lesions” limited by plant veins, surrounding tissue can turn yellow.

The use of Tanos in Alternaria control programmes
Tanos has been used on the continent for a number of years targeted at early blight, and has proved to be very effective. The Famoxate® component of the product is highly active on alternaria spp inhibiting germ tube development and infection.

Rate of use
0.7kg Tanos per hectare. (0.35 - 0.50kg/ha may be used in mixtures with full rate partner products such as mancozeb and fluazinam).

Application
Apply Tanos in not less than 200 litres of water per hectare. Consider using higher water volumes of 300-500 litres of water per hectare in dense crops or where additional stem coverage is required. The spray quality should be MEDIUM (as defined by the BCPC), applied at a pressure of at least 2 bar. Minimum interval between sprays/intervals Tanos may be applied at 7-10 day intervals according to disease incidence and weather conditions. The interval between applications should be reduced to 7 days if conditions are conducive to the spread of blight such as irrigated crops or warm humid conditions.

Resistance management
When fungicides with the same mode of action are used repeatedly over several years in the same field, naturally-occurring, less sensitive strains may survive, propagate and become dominant in that field. A pathogen is considered resistant to a fungicide if it survives a correctly applied treatment at the recommended dose and timing under normal weather conditions. Development of resistance within a pathogen can be avoided or delayed by alternating or mixing products having different modes of action. Tanos is a pre-mixture of famoxadone and cymoxanil, offering complimentary modes of action. Tanos is effective at controlling strains of potato blight which are insensitive to phenylamides. Tanos contains a QoI fungicide. To minimise the risk of resistance to QoIs developing in potato late blight, Tanos must be used in accordance with the following resistance management strategy. Fungicides containing a QoI should not be applied more than 6 times to a potato crop. Do not use more than 3 consecutive QoI-containing sprays.

Compatibility
Refer to Compatibility appendix.

Mixing
Spraying equipment should be thoroughly cleaned before spraying. Tanos mixes easily with water and should be added directly to the spray tank during filling. Wash out container and add washings to the spray tank. Continue agitation until spraying is complete.
