Crown sheath rot

Gaeumannomyces graminis var. graminis

Reddish-brown lesions form first on the outer leaf sheaths of rice (Oryza sativa). As these develop, they darken and spread throughout the crown sheaths until they are mature, at which point they begin producing clusters of perithecia. Where infection is severe, culms may completely rot, resulting in incomplete exsertion and leaf drying.
