Param is a broad-spectrum insecticide containing Profenophos 40% + Cypermethrin 4% w/v, a combination of an organophosphate and a pyrethroid insecticide. It is effective against a wide range of insect pests, including sucking pests, chewing pests, and some lepidopteran larvae. Param is available as an emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulation and is primarily used for agricultural pest control.

Mode of Action:

Param combines the insecticidal properties of its two active ingredients:

  • Profenophos: An organophosphate insecticide that inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an enzyme essential for nerve function. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, causing overstimulation of nerves, paralysis, and eventually death.

  • Cypermethrin: A pyrethroid insecticide that acts on the sodium channels in insect nerve cells, causing repetitive nerve firing, paralysis, and eventually death.

This dual-mode action effectively controls a wide range of insect pests, including sucking insects, chewing insects, and some lepidopteran larvae.

Application:

Param is applied as a foliar spray, directly targeting the leaves and stems of plants where insect pests are present. The insecticide should be thoroughly mixed with water and applied using appropriate spraying equipment to ensure uniform coverage.

Target Pests:

Param effectively controls a wide range of insect pests, including:

  • Sucking pests: Aphids, thrips, jassids, whiteflies, and mealybugs

  • Chewing pests: Caterpillars, beetles, and flies

  • Lepidopteran larvae: American bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera), tobacco caterpillar (Spodoptera litura), and diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella)

Precautions:

While Param is considered relatively safe when used according to label directions, it is essential to take precautions during handling and application.

  • Wear protective clothing, including gloves, goggles, and a mask, when handling or applying Param.

  • Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing.

  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling or applying Param.

  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling or applying Param.

  • Store Param in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from food, feed, and children's reach.

  • Dispose of empty containers safely and responsibly.

  • Param is moderately toxic to fish and aquatic organisms. Avoid contamination of water bodies.
