General Information:

Sofia is a broad-spectrum systemic fungicide that effectively controls a wide range of fungal diseases in various crops, including rice, wheat, pulses, fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals. It is a suspension concentrate formulation that contains Hexaconazole 4% + Carbendazim 16% as the active ingredients. Sofia is known for its preventive and curative action, long residual activity, and resistance management properties.

Mode of Action:

Sofia's active ingredients, Hexaconazole and Carbendazim, belong to different chemical classes and have different modes of action, providing a multi-pronged approach to disease control.

  • Hexaconazole: It inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This disruption of ergosterol synthesis leads to impaired membrane function, growth inhibition, and ultimately the death of fungal pathogens.

  • Carbendazim: It interferes with microtubule formation in fungal cells, disrupting cell division and ultimately leading to the death of the fungal pathogens. It inhibits the synthesis of β-tubulin, a crucial component of microtubules, which are essential for cell division and growth in fungi. This disruption of microtubule formation prevents normal cell division and growth, leading to the inhibition of fungal development and ultimately causing their death.

Application:

Sofia is applied as a foliar spray to the foliage of the target crops. Thorough coverage of the leaves and stems is essential for maximizing its effectiveness. The recommended application rate varies depending on the crop and the disease pressure.

Precautions:

  • Sofia is a moderately toxic fungicide and should be handled with care. Wear protective clothing, gloves, and goggles when handling the product.

  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes. If contact occurs, flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

  • Do not apply Sofia to crops that are under stress from drought, flooding, or other factors.

  • Do not apply Sofia to water bodies or areas where there is a risk of runoff to water bodies. The fungicide is harmful to fish and aquatic organisms.

This list is not exhaustive, and Sofia can control a wide range of other fungal diseases in various crops. For specific information on disease control, always refer to the product label or consult with a local agricultural extension agent.
