A post-emergence grass and broad-leaved herbicide for use on winter and spring wheat, winter and spring barley, rye and triticale.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
IMPORTANT: This information is approved as part of the Product Label. All instructions within this section must be read carefully in order to obtain safe and successful use of this product.
PROTUGAN® is a liquid herbicide for the control of loose silky-bent, mayweeds and chickweed in winter wheat, winter barley, rye and triticale, and for control of mayweeds and chickweed in spring wheat and spring barley. PROTUGAN is absorbed by both the roots and the leaves of the weeds, giving control of weeds present at the time of application and later germinating ones. The effect sometimes only becomes clearly visible after 2-3 weeks depending on weather conditions. Sufficient soil moisture is important for good control, particularly when applied in the spring.

RESTRICTIONS OR WARNINGS
Do not contaminate water with the product or its container.
Do not clean application equipment near surface water. Avoid contamination via drains from farmyards and roads. All crops may suffer some damage, particularly if conditions are not good for application. For rye this can lead to yield reductions. Do not apply on very light sandy soils, pure sandy soils, slightly silty sand and slightly clayey sand with an organic content of <1% as crop damage may occur.
Do not apply to soils with average clay content greater than or equal to 30%.
Do not apply if heavy rain is expected. Do not apply to crops which are under stress such as from nutrient deficiency, water logging, frost damage, to frozen or poorly developed crops.
Do not apply to crops undersown or those due to be undersown. If the application of calcium cyanide has previously been carried out or is planned over the same area, PROTUGAN should not be used. Keep separately from food and feed items.
Do not re-use empty container.
Do not use on drained areas.
Dispose of contents/container to a licensed waste disposal contractor or collection site except for triple rinsed empty containers which can be disposed of as non-hazardous waste.

RESISTANCE
PROTUGAN contains isoproturon a urea belonging to HRAC group C2. Strains of loose silky-bent (Aperca spica venti) may develop resistance to isoproturon products which may lead to poor control. Where there is reduced efficacy from PROTUGAN which is not caused by weather or soil conditions, under no circumstances treat with products containing isoproturon or FOP’s or ALS inhibitors, because cross-resistance is likely. Always follow WRAG guidelines for preventing and managing herbicide resistant weeds. Maximise the use of cultural control measures wherever possible (e.g. crop rotation, ploughing, stale seedbeds, delayed planting, etc.) Use tank-mixes or sequences of herbicides with different modes of action within individual crops
Copies of the guidelines may be obtained from the UK CPA, your distributor, crop advisor or product manufacturer. For further advice on resistance management, contact Teagasc, your agronomist or specialist advisor

Mayweeds
Loose silky-bent
Chickweed The best control is achieved if applied to grasses that have not gone beyond the 4-leaf stage and broad-leaved weeds that have not gone beyond the small rosette stage.

There are no variety restrictions on the use of PROTUGAN in winter and spring wheat, winter and spring barley, winter rye and triticale.

SOIL CONDITION
Prepare a firm fine seedbed for best results, with clods no more than fist size. For best results apply to a moist seedbed.

FOLLOWING CROPS
There are no following crop restrictions when normal harvest takes place. In the event of crop failure, only plant spring wheat, spring barley, maize, potatoes or field beans following ploughing.

MIXING AND SPRAYING
For use by tractor mounted/trailed sprayer.
Add half the required water to the spray tank and being agitation. Thoroughly shake the PROTUGAN container, then add the recommended quantity to the spray tank. Agitate while topping up the tank and continue agitation during spraying. Do not leave sprayer standing with the spray mixture in it. Overlapping of spray swaths should be avoided. Always ensure the sprayer is clean, in good working order and calibrated accurately to the sprayer manufacturer’s recommendations

Emptying the container
RINSE CONTAINER THOROUGHLY by using an integrated pressure rinsing device or manually rinsing three times. Add washings to sprayer at time of filling and dispose of container safely.) Do not re-use container for any purpose.
