Seed leaves are oval. Initial true leaves are oval with serrated margins.
Mature plants are erect, up to 0.5 m tall. A central erect stem, sometimes red-purple at the base, with variable amounts of branching. Stems and branches with short hairs.
Leaves are sparsely hairy, with serrated margins and indented veins, and occur on stems 5–10 mm long. Leaves are opposite and occasionally alternate at the base. Flowers irregularly clustered and occur at the ends of branches.

Plant turns bright red in late autumn or early winter.
