An annual or short-lived perennial grass. Tufts spreading or ascending. Culms 30-100 cm long, often rooting at the base. Sheaths sometimes hairy or hispid. Ligule hairy, membranous at base, about 1 mm long. Leaves flat, glabrous or slightly hairy, up to 30 cm x 10-20 mm wide. Panicles 5-20 cm long with raceme-like ascending branches. Spikelets yellowish-brown or gold coloured, 2-2.8 mm long, glabrous, with conspicuously crumpled glumes.
